HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

I can't believe we are at the close of yet another year.
It amazes me how fast time flies and how much transformation is possible!
This has been a big year of growth for me personally and professionally and from the e mails and notes I receive from you guys - you all are going through the same thing, too!
A quote that has been keeping me going through the crazy times is "Forget the clock and take the compass. The direction you are headed is more important than the time it takes to get there." I don't know who wrote that quote but it sits right on top of my computer on a pink post-it note. :)

I think this time of year allows us to reflect back and celebrate what we have accomplished, who we have been, and look forward to where we want to go in the future. My vision for next year is quite exciting and continues to create a space for all of you to talk, connect, and gather support and information on ways to shift your life.

I am not a big fan of New Year's resolutions - I think the more realistic way to go is to set a goal or intention on a daily or weekly basis and take your life one step at a time.
So many people pledged to shed pounds or exercise regularly - only to be back sitting on a couch, snacking on unhealthy food before the first week of January is up!

How about for this year - we pledge NOT to make a strict resolution but instead we commit to being a powerful force in our own lives by listening to our bodies, treating ourselves healthfully, and loving our lives on a daily basis! How about we reach out to our loved ones, volunteer for a cause that moves us, or take the time to educate ourselves on a topic we are interested in? What if we took more walks, spent more time with our kids, and laughed a hundred times more than we did this year? If you could say you accomplished all of the above - wouldn't that be great? Let's all vow to continue to transform the self-esteem of women and girls worldwide -- together!  Shall we?

CLEANING OUT YOUR CLOSET, 'BEING 'UNCOOL, AND THE JESS NECKLACE

This month's featured Actionist is a personal friend of mine - the kind of friend who has seen me in my underwear! And that's because she is also my stylist (you didn't think I found all those cute clothes I wear on TV on my own did you??)  What I love about Barbra Horowitz is that she's made helping women make peace with their closets her passion in life! It may sound silly but just ask any woman who spends precious morning moments in front of her closet crying because she "doesn't have anything to wear"!  Well, Barbra helps women re design their wardrobe with clothing they already own! Her favorite trick is to hook you up with a tailor or seamstress who can slightly alter older clothing to look like something brand new! Why is this important? Well this technique is affordable and allows you to release all the emotional reasons you hold on to clothes in your closet (raise your hand - who is still holding on to their 'skinny jeans' from high school??) Barbra has helped me a lot and I know she will help you - she's just written a new book and created a DVD (which I'm on by the way) about getting control of your closet! She offers realistic tips and sound advice to create a wardrobe that fits your body type and doesn't cost you a fortune! She also understands dressing 'real' women even though she is in Hollywood and I find her humor and kindness to be a big plus in this crazy town of silicone implants and crowded highways! Check out her work...you won't be sorry!

I am most excited to tell you about our selected reading this month - Erin Elizabeth Conley's "Uncool" is a must read for teens and parents alike! It reminded me why we should embrace our unique qualities even if society deems us as 'uncool'. It's really about individuality and strength written in a lovely voice and makes you smile while you flip the pages. A great gift for your daughter or girlfriend - I urge you to read it!

The company who publishes 'Uncool' is also sponsoring a contest for teens to help design a book cover for a new environmental book they will release called "47 Things Teens Can Do For The Environment". Winning entry will be printed on the book and gets a Flip video camera. All details at www.zestbooks.net.

And if you are searching for that last minute holiday gift...may I suggest the "JESS INNER BEAUTY" necklace from the fantastic designers Lisa and Darla of Beadside the Bay.

Go to www.beadsidethebay.com to see their unique and original designs. I was most tickled to learn they had designed a necklace inspired by my work - it's surreal and humbling (and SO much fun). I have it. I wear it and I love it!! Best of all, these designers really create from the heart and a place of healing - so if you want to support a woman owned small business this holiday - consider purchasing some goodies from them!!

BLESSINGS FOR THE NEW YEAR

I know I always end with thanking you guys for your e mails and letters. It's important to let you know that on the days when I am doubting myself or frustrated by life's obstacles, the moment an e mail arrives from you sharing your story and your thoughts - it immediately brightens my day and reminds me why I do what I do. So thank you for taking the time to write and thank you for sharing my work with your friends and family. Wishing you a marvelous holiday and a blessed new year!!

Love and light,
Jess

Uncool: A girl's guide to misfitting in

-Erin Elizabeth Conley

So you didn’t make the cheerleading squad. So what. You wouldn’t be caught dead in one of those too-short pleated skirts anyway. Fact is, you’re not the same as everyone else. You’re a little darker, a little brighter, a bigger laugher, a bigger loner. You’re totally uncool, right? Except you’re not. An insightful and often comedic commentary on the conundrum of not being one of the gang, Uncool offers up telling quotes from real teens and is a must-have for getting through the horrors of clone-happy high school. With analyses of what “cool” really means, creative activities for alternative thinkers, trendy fashion pointers, and good old-fashioned cool-kid advice, Uncool shows just how cool being uncool can be.

Barbra Horowitz
Celebrity & Personal stylist/Author/creator-designer-Rigged Tee Shirt Couture/Tee parties

Barbra  Horowitz is not only a celebrity/personal stylist and designer she  now adds newly minted author of Closet Control, Producer, and on air personality as  the West Coast correspondent for British Vogue online. Barbra is continuously showcasing her fashion expertise and organic wisdom in a growing number of mediums and venues.

Barbra comes by her innate and clever sense of style not as a learned skill but as a way of life. Her father built a business selling high-end menswear at discounted pricing, and her mother is an out-of-the-box, over-the-top talented jewelry designer. Growing up under the precise fit of men’s clothing and the free form expression of jewelry design, this allowed Barbra to hone her clients image into one of perfect proportions while creating a casual elegance that is never on the nose.

As soon as Barbra was old enough to get a part-time job at her favorite boutique, Contempo Casuals, there was no stopping the retailers that would employ Barbra. From Ann Taylor, MGA (now Guess) to eight years on and off with Nordsrtrom. Once Barbra had the art of selling clothing, she switched gears into cosmetics to study the complete makeover. Running counters for cosmetic giants such as: Borghese, Lancome and prescriptives.

After ten years in retail, Barbra leveraged her ability to transform her customers head to toe and reset her sights from selling products to selling people – fashion models to be exact. As a model agent, Barbra effortlessly knew how to develop the young talent that was put before her and managed their photo shoots, from what they would wear to how their hair and makeup was styled. After eight years in San Francisco, she relocated to Los Angeles where her final post was working for the world renowned John Casablancas’ Elite agency in Beverly Hills. Barbra had the opportunity to handle top models-turned-actresses Charlize Theron, Shannon Elizabeth and Bijou Phillips, booking them for catalogue, high fashion editorial and top advertising campaigns with Bebe, Charles David and Guess.

In 2000, Barbra’s entrepreneurial passion spurred her next career move. After years of selling for others, it was time for Barbra to sell herself. She cut a vintage oversized men’s t-shirt down to a sexy top for clubbing, but stopped short of finishing it because she didn’t know how to sew. Wendy Schechter, the costume designer for the 2001 Britney Spears movie Crossroads, showed her how to lace the sides with excess material, and her line of Rigged Tee Shirt Couture was born. With her unique passion and spirit and an “I-don’t-know-how-to-sew/fashion-on-a-dime” mentality, Barbra was off and running to Goodwill to create her arsenal. Ms. Spears was Barbra’s very first customer, and she went on to dress Cameron Diaz, Heather Graham and Sarah Silverman, just to name a few.

While carried at celebrity favorite LA boutiques, such as Fred Segal and Madison, Barbra quickly realized that these one-of-a-kind creations could not be manufactured and created the Rigged Tee Party, where she would custom-cut her tops for party guests before their eyes. Barbra’s clientele included famed interior designer Kelly Wearstler, Keisha and Forrest Whittaker and producer Jennifer Klein. Bat mitzvahs and corporate clients Air Jordan/Nike, Guess/Marciano, Forever 21, Miss Sixty, Skyy Vodka and Vanity Fair soon followed.

In 2004 Barbra finally became a professional stylist working with such celebs, comedian Chelsea Handler, Friday Night Light’s star Matt Czuchry,
Eureka’s Ed Quinn, High School Musical’s Jessica Tuck, The two meanie mom’s on the Adventures of Old Christine TricIa O’Kelley and Alex Horner.

Barbra’s true passion which inspired Closet Control published by Sterling Press  is playing the role of “the people’s stylist” Spreading the word that working with a stylist is not just for the red carpet or the rich and famous anymore. Barbra has been invited in to the homes of real people teaching her eco-selfish and eco-nomical approach to buying the clothes that you like and making them work for your life.  Barbra is frequently flown around the country to work with clients and has just introduced her Virtual Styling Services. I am very excited says Barbra,
My virtual styling services will allow men and women to work with me from all over the world. With a webcam and laptop the possibilities are endless.

Time to go in the closet…and take a tough-love look at what’s inside!

Wardrobe consultant to the stars, fashion journalist, and style guru Barbra Horowitz is on call for a little clothes therapy. With expert guidance and extremely practical how-tos, Horowitz shows how simple it is to send your fashion-happiness quotient into the stratosphere. She describes her unique fashion philosophy, and introduces her core concept of “eco-selfishness:” working with what you already have to get what you really want by revamping, recycling, and reselling. Throughout, there are easy instructions for restyling clothes along with sidebars packed with streamlining tips and case studies of real-life wardrobe renovations. Plus: the book includes a full-length DVD of a real-life closet therapy sessions with Comedian Chelsea Handler, Styx Frontman Tommy Shaw and lifestyle expert and author Jessica Weiner and much much more.

Barbra lives in Los Angeles with her two pugs Buddha and Sabina and is in the works on her second book.

Wanna be empowered with great ways to take action in your everyday life?

Ways to Take Action

1. If you’re at a loss for new words that make you feel positive, try writing down a wish list of traits you admire in others.

2. This one’s simple but true:  Remember that everyday actions and relationships cause a ripple effect out in the world, so practice being kind, and ask someone else to pass it on

3. Assess your own belief system.  Discover if you’re taking on others’ viewpoints or giving yourself an opportunity to craft you won.  Try writing down an opinion inventory, which can be broad and basic, silly or deep:  what are your thoughts on friendship, political issues, or even doing the laundry?  You may be amazed to discover that you have different opinions than your parents or friends do.

Small steps of action can make a great change!

Also, be sure to check out the Ways to Take Action section of our web site.
